Funeral Policy vs Cremation: Which Should You Choose?

A funeral policy and an unattended cremation are not competing products. One is insurance that protects your family over many years; the other is a single arrangement you pay for once, when a death has already happened. This guide explains the difference in plain words, so you can decide what your family needs.

What is a funeral policy?

A funeral policy is an insurance product. You pay a premium every month, and when someone on the policy dies, the insurer pays a benefit towards the funeral. It protects your family over time, so that a death does not arrive as a financial shock.

Because it is insurance, a policy has rules: who can be covered, how much cover each person has, and a waiting period before natural deaths are covered. These details differ between policies, so always read your own policy schedule, or ask the person who sold it to you to explain it.

What is an unattended cremation?

An unattended (direct) cremation is a cremation without a service on the day. We collect your loved one, care for them, handle the paperwork and the cremation, and return the ashes to the family. The family then holds a memorial in their own time, if they want one.

It is paid once, as one arrangement, at the time it is needed. There is nothing to join, no monthly payment and no waiting period. See our pricing page for exactly what the fee covers.

The difference, side by side

  • When you pay: a policy is paid monthly, often for years, before it is needed. A direct cremation is paid once, when it is needed.
  • What it protects: a policy protects the people on it over time. A direct cremation takes care of one person’s farewell, now.
  • Waiting period: a policy usually has a waiting period before natural deaths are covered. A direct cremation has none and can be arranged straight away.
  • If payments stop: if policy premiums stop, cover can lapse. A direct cremation is a once-off arrangement, so there is nothing to keep up.

When a funeral policy makes sense

A policy suits families who want to plan ahead, who would find a sudden funeral bill hard to meet, or who want several family members covered under one arrangement. It also suits families who expect a full funeral service rather than a direct cremation.

When a direct cremation makes sense

A direct cremation suits families who need to make an arrangement now, who do not have a policy in place, or whose loved one asked for something simple. It is also a good choice when relatives are far away and a memorial later makes more sense than a service within days.

Can you have both?

Yes. Many families keep a policy for long-term protection and still choose a direct cremation when the time comes. If you already have funeral cover, phone us and we will look at it with you before anything is arranged.

Making your decision

There is no single right answer. If you are planning ahead, a policy gives peace of mind. If a death has already happened, a direct cremation gives you a clear, dignified arrangement without waiting. Either way, ask for everything in writing before you agree.
