What if I Want to Change My Mind About Cremation?
It’s a common concern: What if I arrange cremation but later change my mind? Can I get my money back? Is it too late to choose burial instead? Here are the honest answers.
Can You Cancel a Cremation Arrangement?
Yes. As long as the cremation hasn’t been completed, you can cancel and explore other options.
At the Pre-Arrangement Stage: If you’ve pre-arranged cremation but haven’t yet needed the service, you can cancel anytime and receive a full refund if you’ve paid in advance.
After Death, Before Cremation: If someone has passed away and cremation was arranged but not yet completed, the situation depends on the timeline:
- Same day: Contact us immediately. We may be able to stop the process if the body hasn’t been transported to the crematorium yet.
- 1-2 days after death: Contact us urgently. Depending on the crematorium schedule, we may be able to halt the cremation. You’ll need to arrange an alternative (burial) quickly, as the body cannot be stored indefinitely.
- After cremation has started: Cremation cannot be reversed once the process begins. It takes approximately 2 hours. At that point, your only option is to decide what to do with the ashes.
What Happens if You Change Your Mind After Cremation?
Once cremation is complete, you can still choose how to handle the ashes. You have several options:
- Keep at home: Store ashes in an urn in your home
- Bury the ashes: Place ashes in a cemetery grave or columbarium (urn burial)
- Scatter: Release ashes at a meaningful location
- Divide: Split ashes among family members
- Memorial garden: Many cemeteries and parks have memorial sections for scattered ashes
These options provide flexibility even after cremation has occurred. Many families use this flexibility to hold a delayed memorial service or to distribute ashes in ways that honor their loved one’s wishes.
Why People Change Their Minds
There are several common reasons people reconsider cremation:
Religious or cultural beliefs: A family member may have different views about cremation than initially thought. In this case, contact us immediately. We prioritize family wishes.
Discovered preferences: You find documents or communication indicating your loved one preferred burial. If this is discovered early enough, we may be able to redirect.
Family disagreement: Relatives disagree on cremation vs. burial. South African law recognizes pre-arranged cremation as legally binding, but we work with families to find solutions when possible.
Financial change: Burial suddenly becomes an option due to insurance or family support. Burial is generally more expensive than cremation, but if funds are available, alternative arrangements can be made.
Our Cancellation & Refund Policy
Pre-Arrangement Cancellations: Full refund if you cancel before the service is needed.
After Death Cancellations:
- If canceled before body transport to crematorium: We refund the cremation fee minus any costs already incurred (transport authorization, documentation).
- If canceled after transport begins: Limited refund options, as crematorium fees are non-recoverable.
- If canceled after cremation starts: No refund possible; cremation is an irreversible process.
Important Legal Context
Once a cremation has been authorised and the process has begun, it cannot be undone. That is why we take the time to be certain of the family’s wishes before anything proceeds, and we always work with families to find the best outcome.
If you have doubts about cremation, address them before death occurs. Pre-arrangement gives you time to clarify preferences with family, explore all options, and make an informed decision without time pressure.
How to Prevent Misunderstandings
Document your wishes: Create a will or signed document stating your preference for cremation (or burial).
Tell your family: Make sure your loved ones know your wishes and where to find documentation.
Pre-arrange in writing: Affordable Cremations can formalize your wishes with a signed agreement. This prevents family conflict and ensures your preferences are honored.
Discuss alternatives: If you’re uncertain, talk through all options (cremation, burial, hybrid approaches) before pre-arranging.
