How to Register a Death and Get a Death Certificate in South Africa
A death in South Africa must be registered with the Department of Home Affairs, and in most cases the funeral director does this on the family’s behalf as part of the funeral arrangement. The registration produces the official death certificate the family needs for the estate, banks, insurers, and pension funds.
Who can register a death?
The next of kin, the executor of the estate, or a funeral director acting on the family’s behalf. In practice the funeral director handles it, because they are already collecting the medical certification and the deceased person’s identity documents.
What is needed to register a death?
The medical certificate of cause of death completed by the attending doctor; the deceased person’s identity document; the identity document of the person reporting the death; and the completed death notification paperwork.
Where a death is unnatural or unexplained, the police and forensic pathology services are involved and the process takes longer.
How long does it take?
Where the paperwork is complete and the death was natural, registration is usually completed quickly and the funeral can proceed. Delays arise where documents are missing, where the death was unnatural, or over public holidays when Home Affairs offices are closed.
How many copies do you need?
More than you expect. Plan for at least six to eight. Each of the following will typically want one, and several will insist on an original rather than a photocopy: the bank, for each account held; each insurer and funeral policy provider; the medical aid; the pension or provident fund; the Master of the High Court, for the estate; SARS; the employer; and transfer of any vehicle or property.
Getting extras at the outset is far easier than returning to Home Affairs months later.
Is death certificate assistance included in a funeral quote?
Sometimes, and sometimes not – this is worth asking directly, because it is a common place for a fee to appear later. With us, documentation and death certificate assistance is included in the R9,800.
What happens after registration?
The death certificate is what unlocks everything else: the estate process with the Master of the High Court, insurance and policy claims, closing accounts, and transferring assets. Nothing in the estate can move without it.
