What Does “All-Inclusive” Actually Mean in a Cremation Quote?
“All-inclusive” has no legal definition in South African funeral pricing. It means whatever the provider using it decides it means, which is why two quotes carrying the same word can differ by thousands of rands once the invoice arrives.
Here is how to test any quote, including ours.
The seven questions to ask any funeral provider
One. Is collection included, at any hour? Some providers include daytime collection and bill separately for nights, weekends, and public holidays – which is when a great many deaths happen.
Two. Is there a distance limit? “Anywhere in Gauteng” and “within 30km” are very different promises. Ask which one you are being given.
Three. Is mortuary storage included, and for how long? Documentation can take several days. If storage is billed daily beyond a short window, a delay outside your control becomes a cost you did not budget for.
Four. Is the documentation included? Death registration and death certificate assistance genuinely take work, and some providers price it separately. Ask.
Five. What urn is included? “An urn is included” can mean a proper urn or a cardboard container. Ask what it actually is.
Six. Is the return of the ashes included? Some providers include the cremation but charge for delivery of the ashes, or require collection from a location inconvenient to the family.
Seven. What is not included? The most useful question of the seven. A provider who answers it directly and specifically is one you can work with.
What our R9,800 covers, and what can be added
Our R9,800 core fee for an unattended cremation in Gauteng covers collection during standard hours, storage, the coffin, Home Affairs registration, the cremation fee itself, a basic urn, and the return of the ashes with the certificates.
A few costs depend on circumstances and are paid to other people. When one applies, we pass it on at cost: after-hours or night collection overtime; an oversized coffin; the doctor’s fee for completing Form B; hospital paperwork fees (usually R350 to R400); and external mortuary fees.
Optional extras are separate again: premium urns, extra certified death certificate copies, premium hearse options, witnessing the cremation, obituary placement and scattering services. Each is quoted before you agree to it, and none is added unless you ask for it.
Why does this matter so much?
Because of when the conversation happens. A family arranging a cremation is doing so in the first days after a death, often exhausted, frequently not sleeping, and not in a state to audit a quotation. That is precisely the moment at which an unclear price does the most damage.
A quote that names every cost before you agree is not a marketing position. It is the minimum a family in that situation is owed.
